Hardie Grant Books published my autobiography Chapters and Chances in 2003; it was released as a paperback the following year. Beautifully designed by Rob McMicking, it is a wholly illustrated coffee table book conceived in the style of a souvenir theatre show program; his unrestricted access to the significant personal print and photographic archive held by me greatly enhanced the final product. The book covers a period of more than fifty years and in doing so attempts to place the body of my theatrical work in a context both personal and historical.
Attempting to touch on so much material in necessarily limited space means there is a modicum of personal anecdote included. I have redressed this situation by writing a second companion volume that is both memoir and diary: Omissions. It is currently on the desk of the original publishers where I am not optimistic about its future. In the end it was really an opportunity to get stuff off my chest and out of my head once and for all, I don´t want or need to revisit any of it.
